Understanding the cost of a cavity filling is an important step in taking care of your dental health. The price of a filling can vary based on factors like the filling material you choose and the location of the cavity. Simple fillings like amalgam tend to cost less, while more advanced materials like porcelain can be more expensive.
Knowing how these factors affect the cavity filled cost will help you make an informed decision. It’s also a good idea to check with your insurance to see what’s covered and how much you'll need to pay out of pocket for the cost of cavity filling.
A dental filling is a treatment used to repair cavities caused by tooth decay. The process involves removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling it with a durable material to restore its strength and function. This procedure helps prevent further damage to the tooth and restores its original shape, allowing it to perform its regular function.
Tooth fillings serve as a necessary treatment to avoid bacterial invasion and halt progressive tooth decay. If a cavity is left untreated, it can progress, potentially causing more serious dental problems and requiring costlier procedures. While small composite fillings may be economical, larger restorations with premium materials will cost significantly more.
Your filling's price reflects various factors influencing cost - primarily the restoration material and how much tooth structure is affected.
Bigger cavities require more filling material and additional time to ensure proper treatment. This increases the overall cost of the procedure.
The choice of filling material significantly impacts the cost. Amalgam fillings are generally less expensive, while porcelain and gold fillings tend to be more costly due to their durability and appearance.
Highly experienced dentists often charge more for their expertise, as their work can influence both the cost and the quality of the procedure.
If procedures like X-rays, exams, or other treatments are necessary before filling the cavity, they can increase the total cost.
Amalgam fillings are one of the most affordable options, made from a mixture of metals. The price for a cavity filling with amalgam typically ranges from $50 to $150 per tooth.
Composite resin fillings mimic your tooth's natural shade for invisible restorations. They usually cost between $100 and $400 per tooth, depending on the size and location in the mouth, including back teeth or front teeth.
Gold fillings are durable and long-lasting but come with a higher cost. The cost of a gold filling for a cavity averages $250 to $650 per tooth.
Porcelain fillings are the most expensive, offering an aesthetic advantage for visible teeth. Expect to pay between $500 and $2,800 for a porcelain filling, depending on the types of teeth being treated.
Most dental insurance plans do cover cavity fillings, but the amount they cover can vary. Generally, insurance will pay for tooth filling cost with insurance, especially for basic fillings like amalgam or composite resin. The amount covered depends on two key elements: your insurance plan details and the dental charges for fillings in your area.
The types of fillings may affect your coverage. For example, porcelain fillings or gold fillings may not be fully covered, as they are considered more cosmetic or premium. Additionally, your dentist’s office being in-network may reduce your out-of-pocket costs. If your filling is for a damaged tooth that requires more extensive tooth repair, this could also influence the cost. In some cases, tooth extraction may be required before a filling, which can further impact the cost.
Porcelain and gold fillings tend to be the costliest choices because of their longevity and aesthetic appeal. Porcelain fillings work particularly well for front teeth since they closely mimic the natural shade of teeth. Gold fillings are extremely durable and are often preferred for back teeth.
Despite the higher cavity filling cost, many patients choose these materials for their longevity and aesthetic benefits. The cost of filling dental with these materials can range from $500 to $2,800, depending on the tooth’s location. The average cost of fillings for teeth may vary based on the material and size.
In some cases, if the cavity is extensive or the tooth has significant damage, a Root Canal Treatment may be needed before a filling can be applied. This additional treatment can increase the overall cost, but it’s necessary for preserving the tooth’s health.
Without insurance, the cost of a cavity filling typically ranges between $100 and $1,000, depending on the material and cavity size.
While most dental insurance policies provide coverage for cavity fillings, reimbursement amounts vary based on the filling material used and the specifics of your plan. Basic fillings are often covered.
Filling a cavity is generally cheaper than pulling a tooth, which may require more complex treatments like implants.
Dental filling costs usually fall in the $100 to $500 range, depending on the filling material and the dentist's location.
Porcelain fillings are the most expensive, with prices ranging from $500 to $2,800 due to their durability and appearance.

So refreshing to meet an HONEST dentist who isn’t trying to upsell you anything. I definitely highly recommend!Posted on Donald LowryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic service! Had a bad tooth that was absolutely killing me for several days. I load going to the dentist so I don’t have a normal one. Set the appointment in the morning and got in that same day. The dentist explained saving versus extracting the tooth and 35 minutes later I was going home. He was extremely thorough and telling me what he was going to do and with the post office instructions. The staff both out front and his assistants were fantastic!! absolutely could not have asked for a better experience and he will be my dentist going forward.
